When Retirees Stay in the Plan
Both employers and participants will discover benefits
W
hen defined contribution plan
participants are about to retire,
they receive financial information-next
steps on leaving the company-from
plan administrators, human
resources personnel and retail retirement
service providers. Among the first pieces
of that information are typically instructions
for rolling their plan savings into an
individual retirement account. They are
seldom told that not only may they leave
their assets in the plan, but this might be a
better option than rolling the account over.
From the sponsor's perspective,
there are several benefits to retirees
deciding to leave their savings behind.
The two biggest are scale and buying
power, according to Lorie Latham, head
of L. Latham Consulting in Nebo, North
Carolina, and formerly a senior defined
contribution strategist at T. Rowe Price.
" The higher the assets in the plan,
the more negotiating power the sponsor
has in going to asset managers and
recordkeeping platforms and negotiating
fees down, " says Latham. This realization
has contributed, over the last decade, to
a strong trend in plan sponsors encouraging
participants to keep their assets
in-plan. This is particularly true in plans
with more than $500 million in assets,
she says.
" I also think we're in this space
of workforce management, " she says,
pointing out how plan sponsors systematically
help participants prepare for, and
ultimately enter, retirement. " Having a
more holistic view and communicating
that to your participant base-being part
of that
journey with them-creates a
more philosophical opportunity to [put]
the 401(k) plan front and center. "
However, there are some caveats that
employers and sponsors should be aware
of regarding keeping new retirees enrolled.
