Hands-Off
PROACTIVE plan sponsors are much
more apt to believe their workers will have
a financially secure retirement than are
the more laissez-faire, says a survey report
from J.P. Morgan Asset Management,
" The Power of Being Proactive. "
In the survey, proactive sponsors were
those that indicated " they place participants
on a strong saving and investing
path through features such as automatic
enrollment, automatic escalation and
streamlined investment decisions such as
a target-date fund [TDF]. "
Additionally, 70% think their approach
will help employees retire at the age they
have targeted, compared with only 43% of
sponsors without such a plan design.
J.P. Morgan found 41% of sponsors
fully automate their plan, while 59% let
their participants make their own choices.
Among plans that the firm identifies as
proactive, 87% believe their approach is an
appropriate benefit for their organization,
compared with 74% of other sponsors.
These plan sponsors also think
their plan design demonstrates their
level of concern about their employees
(84% vs. 64%), helps them in recruiting
quality employees (74% vs. 57%),
helps their workers appreciate their
compensation package (71% vs. 60%),
motivates employees (71% vs. 50%)
and helps the employer retain quality
employees (69% vs. 56%).

the importance sponsors place on their
goals and how successful they believe
their plans are in achieving them, " says
Catherine Peterson, managing director,
global head of insights programs at J.P.
Morgan Asset Management. " [The findings]
