was the theme of the 2021 PLANSPONSOR National Conference
(PSNC), which took place in late June-the second year this
annual event was held online due to the pandemic. As always,
the conference was designed for anyone who administers one
or more retirement plans: for plan sponsors new to the role or
with years of experience; for executives on the finance, treasury
or human resources (HR) side of the plan; for employers whose
workforce was hit hard over this past difficult year and a half or
whose plan is faring relatively well.
The panel discussions, which featured plan sponsor peers,
retirement plan advisers and providers, and legislative and legal
experts, presented insights for how to continue building retirement
plans and financial wellness programs that improve the
savings outcomes of your unique workforce, while implementing
proper corporate governance to manage fiduciary duties.
On the next few pages are highlights of this year's conference
coverage. Included are the newest developments in areas such as
what to expect from provider relationships; understanding the
latest best practices for investment selection; fiduciary mistakes
to avoid; investing lessons from an aging workforce; in-plan
guaranteed income; and the modern investment menu.

of thumb is to stay alert to developments and new services in
the industry. Do not be that sponsor that " gets into a five-, six-,

'What to Expect From
Provider Relationships'
Providers contribute, to one degree or another, to the overall
success of the plan, said experts on a panel about relationships
between plan sponsors, plan advisers, third-party administrators
(TPAs) and the plan's recordkeeper.
Rachelle Moody, total rewards manager of Fugro USA
Holdings Inc., a finalist for a 2021 PLANSPONSOR Plan Sponsor
of the Year award, has collaborated with both recordkeepers and
advisers. " I prefer to work with both as a true partnership, " she
said. " I lean on their ability and bounce ideas off of them and look
to them to provide expert knowledge where I may not have it. "
To her, the most valuable thing a recordkeeper can offer is
a combination of products and service knowledge, plus interpersonal
skills, she said. " I want to be able to have a conversation just
back and forth, and, while I don't get too involved in asking about
families, I want to create a relationship with them. "
