How to prompt employees to engage with the plan

meetings with a financial adviser when
the plan sponsor offers the option.
So, how does the sponsor motivate
participants to engage in this way? The
answer is likely to try several approaches.
" Plan sponsors have to provide
multiple avenues and methods, " says
David Hinderstein, regional senior vice
president with OneDigital Retirement
+ Wealth in White Plains, New York.
" Sponsors have to understand that some
employees are more apt to engage in
a purely digital platform, others want
human engagement, while a different
group will respond best to hybrid. "

At a time when many sponsors automatically
enroll employees and invest them
in a qualified default investment alternative,
people's priorities can get overlooked.
One-on-one meetings
can help them
explore their priorities, which ultimately
will help them to save for retirement.

these meetings, which allow employees to
express their concerns, says Megan Yost,
senior vice president and an engagement
strategist with Segal Benz in Boston.
Sponsors that offer this resource should
be mindful, though, of possible employee
reluctance. Employers must show support
for the meetings, she says. The best way
to boost participation in one-on-ones is to
allow employees to schedule them during
their work day, she says. She advises that
managers can model this, sharing with
their team how and when they themselves
meet with an adviser or benefits counselor
or attend a webinar.
