outlooks, the researchers noted.
" The [findings] make clear that one
period's results cannot be used to predict
those of the next period, " the report
stated. " Bond yields change, stock valuations
shift, and inflation rates rise and
fall. Each has a strong effect on both
portfolio performance
and safe withdrawal
amounts. "
Benz cites concerns that some participants
will be frightened away from fixed
income after seeing what is usually considered
the safest form of investment showing
up as a loss in their retirement portfolio.
" I think fixed income is shaping up
as a deeply unloved asset type, " she says.
" I wonder if people will be scarred for a
generation after stocks and bonds are
both on track to lose almost the same
amount this year. "
Overall, the study points to the value
of balance, Benz observes.
" Over the usual retirement time
horizon, balanced allocations lead to the
highest starting withdrawal amounts, "

EBSA Restores $1.4 Billion in 2022
The Employee Benefits Security Administration
recovered $1.4 billion through various
programs for fiscal year 2022. This falls well
below the $2.4 billion the agency restored a
year ago. For 2022, the bulk was retrieved
through enforcement and investigations.
A Record Year for DC Plans
The contribution rate reached an all-time high
in 2021. Employers upped their contribution
to 5.6% of pay, and they and workers together
pitched in an average 13.9% of pay. Almost
90% of eligible workers saved into a plan.
