Virtual Lessons Learned
The success of online meetings has surprised sponsors and advisers alike
A
s employers contemplate a return
to in-person participant meetings,
two years of virtual meetings
have yielded some insights.
" There was always a bias toward
live participant meetings being more
legitimate, and doing something virtually
was taking the easy way out, " says
Steven Dimitriou, managing partner in
Mayflower Advisors in Boston. " There
was a perception that doing meetings
in person meant you care more. " The
pandemic, of course, forced everyone to
hold their participant meetings virtually,
he notes. " I've been very surprised at how
effective they've been. We've been able to
show employers that we can still show the
same levels of attention, care and emotion
virtually, but we're able to do the meetings
more efficiently. "
Schwab Retirement Plan Services
has seen a big migration to virtual meetings,
driven mostly by the pandemic but
building on trends that began during
the previous several years. In 2019, the
company's education sessions were split:
76% on-site and 24% virtual. In 2020,
Schwab held 82% of its education sessions
virtually, and that reached 99.7% last year.
What Has Been Gained?
Some lessons from virtual meetings have
been unsurprising, while others have
surprised, indeed.
* Many participants prefer virtual.
" On the participant side, I had a longstanding
perception that everybody prefers
to meet in person, " says Jeffrey Petrone,
managing director at SageView Advisory
Group in West Palm Beach, Florida. " But
the fact that many employees have been
willing to meet with somebody from our
team virtually shows me that isn't true. "
This is enabling SageView to have more
conversations with more people, as an
