How 'Well' Is 'Well' Enough?
Keys to designing an effective-customized-financial wellness program
" A
financial wellness program is
not a commodity, " says Ellen
Lander, founder of Renaissance
Benefit Advisors Group in New York City.
" I think we as an industry come up
with these buzzwords. I say to people,
'What does financial wellness even
mean?' " she continues. " There are so
many angles on that. It needs to be a
different program for every employer. "
Lander is one of three plan advisers
who shared their wisdom for designing an
effective, customized, financial wellness
program. Here are their top suggestions:
Think about health and financial
wellness holistically. It is important
that a customized program be consistent
with an organization's culture and its
overarching objectives for its employees,
says Tom Mayer, a founding partner
in Shepherd Financial in Indianapolis.
" More employers are trying to figure out
how they can connect health wellness
and financial wellness together, " he says.
" They want to design a holistic program,
and the companies that implement these
two programs in a cohesive way are
well ahead of the game in their impact
[on employees], compared with other
employers. "
Narrow it
down to
targeted
topics. Some employers want to design
a targeted program that just focuses on
their employees' most common financial
issues. " In those cases, we try to figure
out at the start where the financial 'pain
points' might be for their people, " Mayer
says. Some of his clients have performed
an employee financial wellness survey
upfront. " The survey mentions a wide
array of different topics we can speak on
and gives a little snippet of what content
an education session might contain. And
