PLAN SPONSOR
EACH YEAR, the editors of PLANSPONSOR magazine choose an impressive
cross-section of plan sponsors who demonstrate leadership in providing
a more secure retirement for their employer's workers. To be considered,
a plan sponsor must first be nominated for the award. Nominations come
from across the industry and are often submitted by a recordkeeper-,
adviser- or consultant-partner. After being nominated, each sponsor is asked
to complete an online form, providing details about its plan administration,
participant demographics and data such as deferral and participation
rates. A committee of PLANSPONSOR editors reviews the submissions and
chooses those that rise to the top as our finalists.
Crafting a retirement plan is an art, not a science. As shown by the
wide array of plan sponsors we have recognized over the years-and in our
everyday editorial coverage-there is no single " right " strategy for designing
a plan. The innovative approaches we see each year make it clear that various
methods, along with thoughtful design decisions, can enable success.
With each new cycle, we rethink the Plan Sponsor of the Year Award
categories a bit to consider the breadth and depth of the retirement programs
available today. To allow for comparisons across plans of similar types and
sizes, this year's awards are in nine categories: six corporate defined contribution;
nonprofit DC; public DC; and total retirement offering. With the
caliber of plans that are always nominated, being selected as a finalist is an
important designation to be celebrated on its own.
This year's class of PLANSPONSOR Plan Sponsor of the Year winners
and finalists are, once again, inspiring, and we hope you take time to get to
