Through the decades, sponsors find new
strategies to make plan assets grow

etirement investing has evolved significantly over the past 30 years. Regulatory and
investment product changes have ushered in a new era of leaner, simplified menus,
sometimes with add-on services such as retirement income provisions or emergency
savings accounts.
The way retirement plan investments are structured has also changed, experts interviewed
for this story note. While mutual funds still dominate the world of defined contribution
plans, collective investment trusts and managed accounts are also taking more market share as
plan sponsors look to lower fees and offer more flexibility, sources say.
DB vs. DC
Prior to the 1980s, if an employee had a retirement plan through work it was most likely a
defined benefit pension plan. The 1980s ushered in a new era, that of defined contribution
plans, creating two separate groups of participants-those who would have a pension on retirement
and those who would not.
Often, DB plans get held up as a gold standard for retirement security, but recent studies
suggest that the reality is less straightforward.
Capital Group recently looked at the past six decades of retirement history in a new study
titled " For worse or better? Retirement security through time, " which shows that DB plans have
experienced their share of tumult. Meanwhile, since PLANSPONSOR's inception, DC plans
have made significant strides toward improving participant services.
" Many of the issues we face today in retirement, including gaps in coverage or people
not having access to retirement plans, were also prevalent when pensions were the norm, "
explains Ralph Haberli, head of institutional retirement at Capital Group in Los Angeles and
one of the study's authors. He says the core problems faced by plan sponsors and participants
