at Hub International Insurance
Services Inc. in Chicago.

American today probably isn't buying
insurance outside of the workplace-aside
from auto/home-[and we] employees
really look to our employers to provide
everything we'll need to protect our families. "
This is where voluntary benefits
come into play, Garber says.
Voluntary benefits fill various needs
for employees, most importantly allowing
them to customize their employer benefits
to their unique circumstances, she says.
" When chosen and packaged well, they
are customizable solutions to promote the
overall well-being of employees. " This can
help employers attract and retain the best
workers, she says.
An employer's ability to reduce
spending stems from the fact that, for
the more than 20 voluntary benefits it
may choose from, to offer, " employees
pay 100% through payroll deduction, "
says Tim Weber, national business leader,
voluntary benefits, at Mercer in Des
Moines, Iowa.
Why Offer Them?
Traditionally, voluntary options have been
restricted to short-term disability, critical
illness and life-insurance policies. Today,
employers can help their employees build
a stronger financial safety net through
nontraditional voluntary benefits, such
as financial planning and education, pet
insurance, legal plans, and protection
