ESG Comes to Light
The philosophy has given rise to a number of investment options
W
hen the world's corporations,
whether through negligence
or intention, make mistakes,
perform misdeeds or are generally bad citizens,
it garners headlines. Gender inequity
in the workplace and boardroom, inattention
to the environment, or carelessness
with customer information are some possible
causes-with commensurate impact
on earnings and share prices.
In response, investors have raised
their expectations for companies to be
more attentive to their business policies,
which generated ESG-an investment
philosophy that combines traditional analysis
with scrutiny of a firm's track record
on environmental, social and governance
considerations.
The field is still new and has yet to
gain full traction in the U.S., but extensive
study suggests that investing in companies
with a positive ESG orientation can
return as much or more than conventional
investing methods, while reducing
the risk of negative corporate surprises.
ESG represents an evolution from
earlier efforts at socially responsible
investing (SRI), which altogether excluded
investment in companies doing business
in areas deemed undesirable on ethical
grounds, such as tobacco, alcoholic beverages,
armaments, and oil and gas.
But holding to such principles comes
with a cost: " It's easy to demonstrate that
if you exclude the SRI industries, you're
reducing the investment opportunity set,
and probably damaging performance
and not fulfilling your fiduciary responsibility, "
says Chris Thompson, head of
global equity manager research in the
Stamford, Connecticut, office of consultants
Willis Towers Watson.
" Rather than excluding companies, "
he explains, " ESG investors are asking
more questions-for consumer goods
