Participant Education and Advice
Financial wellness has made many headlines recently, and plans
seem to be taking note, as 2019 saw across-the-board increases
in financial education offerings. Only 38% of plans fail to give
participants access to such resources, which seems high given
the almost universal agreement (96%) that financial wellness is at
least slightly useful to participants. Investment advice is also more
common and now exists in 81% of plans. One-on-one advice is
still the preferred strategy, at 45% of plans, but proprietary recordkeeping
solutions, at 42%, has narrowed the gap in recent years.

Sponsors' confidence in the impact of
their
retirement benefits
continues to grow. More than 35% of sponsors now " strongly "
or " moderately " agree that employees will reach their retirement
goals by age 65, while 92% feel they have a responsibility to
improve employee financial wellness. Sponsors are more split as
to the best way to deal with separated employees. While 41%
of respondents admitted to having no preference on the topic,
the remainder almost evenly divided over whether such balances
should be retained in-plan (31%) or rolled out of the plan (27%).
