FINALISTS
THE ROLE OF A PLAN SPONSOR is often thankless-but vital to the financial security
of most Americans with access to a retirement plan. Charged with plan administration
and accepting fiduciary responsibilities, the sponsor-often in the midst of other finance or
human resources (HR) tasks depending on his or her position in the organization-and the
plan committee make decisions that help, or hurt, employees' financial wellness. The Plan
Sponsor of the Year Awards program recognizes plan sponsors that show an exceptional commitment
to their participants' financial health and retirement success.
Nominations are made in the fall, finalists are announced in February, and,
this year, the winners will be announced in September. Nominations are accepted
from anyone involved with retirement planning-including providers, advisers,
consultants, actuaries, attorneys, third-party administrators (TPAs), and a sponsor's
colleagues and employees. All nominees are then asked to complete an online form,
supplying details about their plan's administration, participant statistics and data.
The editorial team at PLANSPONSOR spends days reviewing these nominations
and entries, weighing the plan designs, contribution rates and investment strategies-acknowledging
these are all relative to industry and company size. That is,
plans in some industries are expected to have higher metrics than plans in others.
And judges may expect plans with a generous employer contribution to have a statistically
higher income replacement rate than do others.
The award is given in many categories to recognize all plan types, so any sponsor
can be eligible. The 2020 awards have 10 categories in order to allow for the most
accurate comparisons across plan types and sizes. We congratulate the 2020 Plan
Sponsor of the Year finalists and know that each of our readers, whatever type or size
