ach year, the editors of PLANSPONSOR magazine ask for assistance in seeking out plan
sponsors that show leadership in providing a more secure retirement for their employees.
In the fall, the editorial team requests recommendations from across the industry, after
which each nominated sponsor is asked to complete an online form, supplying details about
its plan's administration and participant data. A committee of PLANSPONSOR editors reviews
the submissions and selects those that rise to the top, as Plan Sponsor of the Year finalists.
Choosing which plan sponsors to honor is far from easy. Although we seek plans that
produce positive outcomes, what makes the best plan design, contribution rate or investment
strategy is all relative; it is impossible to say, empirically, what is right or wrong, better or worse
for all plans. You can see this illustrated in the diversity of the finalists we recognized in the
February/March issue of PLANSPONSOR, and online at plansponsor.com.
Sure, some best practices are generally seen as more valuable than others, and the plans
in some industries predictably have higher metrics than plans in some other industries could
achieve. Additionally, generosity from an employer-in matching or discretionary contributions-can
go a long way toward helping employees amass retirement savings. Still, the
right approach and careful design decisions can enable success-even without the need for
significant company contributions.
The 2019 " class " of PLANSPONSOR Plan Sponsor of the Year winners, whose stories
follow, is inspiring. We hope you take the time to get to know each of them here and online,
or meet them in person at the 2019 PLANSPONSOR National Conference, June 5 through 7,
in Washington, D.C.
This year's winners span 10 categories of plans: five segments of corporate 401(k); public
defined contribution (DC); two segments of nonprofit DC; public defined benefit (DB); and total
retirement offering (TRO). Every year we refine the categories to consider the breadth and depth
of retirement programs available today and feedback from plan sponsors.
We also have added a new recognition: the Plan Sponsor of the Year Honoree. As we
reviewed entries, two plans in particular intrigued us-plans that represent many of the
ideals we want to recognize but did not quite fit into our existing categories. We are pleased to
honor the work their committees are doing.
