ver the next several pages, we recognize the fifth class of PLANSPONSOR Service Stars-
individual and team recordkeeper account representatives and relationship managers whom
plan sponsor clients have identified as praiseworthy partners in the day-to-day management
of their retirement plans.
As part of the annual PLANSPONSOR Defined Contribution (DC) Survey, plan sponsor respondents
may nominate representatives they believe are worthy of this honor. This year, the PLANSPONSOR
surveys and research group reviewed over 2,000 written nominations, including specific scenarios
and comments that clients had supplied in our 2018 DC Survey, in order to choose the six Individual
and four Team Service Stars for 2019.
These recordkeeper employees, many of whom have worked in the retirement industry for decades,
are plan sponsors' go-to support and problem-solvers. They exemplify the qualities in a relationship
manager that plan sponsors hope to find when selecting a new recordkeeper.
The importance of the role of an account representative and/or relationship manager cannot be
overestimated. According to the 2018 PLANSPONSOR DC Survey - Recordkeepers, when sponsors
ranked the various services their recordkeeper offers, their greatest satisfaction was with the individuals
or teams supporting their plan. " Plan/industry knowledge, " " responsiveness and consistency, "
and " regulatory/compliance support " were the three highest-rated areas of service cited, with over 50%
of respondents rating those of their provider a perfect 10.
This year's Service Stars were nominated for excellence in a range of services areas. Some services
were transactional, such as incorporating an acquired company's retirement plan into the sponsor's
plan; creating a custom communication plan; helping a sponsor with a voluntary corrective action;
and assisting a sponsor with a recordkeeper change. Others were varied and cumulative, where the
individual was recognized for a tenure of exceptional service.
We had the pleasure of honoring the Service Stars, in March, at the PLANSPONSOR/
PLANADVISER Awards for Excellence dinner in New York-it was great to meet them in person.
