show, more workers are opting
to stay in the workforce longer, leav$500b

assets in their 401(k) plan account and
not drawing down their balance.
At the same time, there has been a
positive bull market and increasingly positive
inflows to defined contribution (DC)
plans in general, with an overall growth of
70% in DC plan assets from 2009 through
2017-plan participants are continuing to
save in their retirement plan at work.
Further, as the strong economy has
fueled equity growth, more Baby Boomers
have been hitting the critical age of 70.5,
when the IRS demands that participants
make required minimum distributions
(RMDs), withdrawing at least a minimum
amount each year and paying income tax
on the appropriate portion. As the Baby
Boomers increasingly start to draw down
their savings, negative flow numbers are
indicated-a trend that began in 2013.
Brooks Herman, vice president of
data and research at Strategic Insight,
the parent company of PLANSPONSOR,
in San Diego, says, " We see the current
negative flow numbers shrinking due to
the growth of automatic enrollment. "
The 2018 PLANSPONSOR DC Survey
indicates that almost 47% of plans now use
auto-enrollment, up from 42.7% in 2017.
The percentage of plans using automatic
escalation, whereby participants' contributions
are increased annually for them,
grew from 35.4% in 2017 to 38%.
" The industry will reach a critical
mass in the near future, where the sum
of automatic enrollment dollars outpaces
Baby Boomer withdrawals, " Herman
says. " At that point, we'll see inflows just
increase in 401(k) accounts thereafter. "
