rom almost any perspective, the
more than $1 billion Mega Market
is aspirational. Smaller-plan sponsors
wish to grow their assets in order to
surpass the $1 billion threshold: a " magic
number " whose greatest value could be
psychological-although the asset-based
fees can certainly shrink once a plan hits
that level. Providers with the capability
to service this market also aspire to collect
Mega Market clients. These tend to
be more profitable than small-plan clients,
and to have many mega plans helps
attract more of the same.
But not all providers, regardless of
aspirations, are equipped to service the
very demanding needs of the largest plan
sponsors, and, of those that are able, not
all are great at it. For this reason, the volatility
of the industry's net recommendation
rate could be somewhat expected,
climbing for three straight years to 2016's
record 52.8%, then falling back over the

Market plans are noticeably less satisfied
with their providers' plan sponsor
tools, reporting, analytics and plan
administration than are smaller retirement
plans. Verbatim comments point
to the fact that plans with over $1 billion
in assets tend to have more to say about
tensions caused by providers serving their
own best interests vs. those of the plan
